A 1990’s “Remix” by Elliott Earls For February ’21

A New Screenprint Over A Poster From The 90’s

This is a maximalist image. It is a tightly wound and complex composition. In this image, I’ve taken a 30 by 40 inch two color poster that I designed and produced in 1995. This new print is a kind of ”re-mix.” I’m screen printing heavy white ink over portions of the image in order to be able to then screen print new color imagery over the top of this poster. The final new print is partially imagery and typography from the mid 1990’s and partially imagery and typography from 2021. I’m going to describe this image moving from the background to the foreground. On light, slightly blue-green uncoated paper a complex black ballpoint pen drawing of a ribcage, spine and lightbulb interweaves with typography that states “Focus on the Cathode Kingdom and the Focal Length of Fame.” In effect I’m taking new imagery and superimposing that on top of my work from the mid 1990s. The new image can be describe like this: a large green poster with a very complex hand-drawn ballpoint pen image in black serves as a background for a three dimensional image of horned cyclops alien. This alien is rendered in deep blue, hot yellow and pink, ringed in opaque white. As part of the re-mixed, new image there are two large words one top and one bottom stating “New Power.” The typeface of these words is bubbly and strangely three dimensional looking font named Typhoid Mary. I designed this font in 1995. The font is sold by Emigre Inc.

In 1995 Elliott Earls released an interactive multi-media composition entitled “Throwing Apples At The Sun.” The package consisted of; 30 minutes of music and spoken word tracks on CD, 1 CD-ROM interactive multi-media composition, a collection of original fonts and four 23 x 37 inch 2 spot color posters. 

This new print for February 2021 is a “remix” of one of the posters from this project. 30 of the original posters from “Throwing Apples At The Sun” have been remixed with imagery from 2021. Each print consists of an original 1995 press proof with a new hand-pulled 4 spot color screen print on top of the original image.
